Tuesday Zouk Classes with AmoZouk

Join AmoZouk Tuesday nights for zouk classes for all levels. See class descriptions below for more details.

Tuesday Night Schedule:

  • 6:30pm-7:30pm: Beyond Foundations (Level 2)

  • 7:30pm-8:30pm: Zouk Foundations (Level 1)

  • 7:30pm-8:30pm: Advanced Zouk Techniques (Level 3)

  • 8:30pm-9:15pm: Practica (free!)

Class Descriptions:

The beginner-friendly 7:30pm Zouk Foundations classes are ideal for new-to-zouk dancers as well as “begintermediate” students looking to brush up on their fundamentals.

Look at all these students working on their projection footwork technique!

No dance experience required! Never done a partner dance before? Don’t sweat it - we gotchu! These classes are designed for students with no dance background.

No partner required! We rotate partners throughout class, so you’ll get a chance to dance with a lot of different people, including the instructors.

For more intermediate dancers, the earlier 6:30pm Beyond Foundations classes will be diving deeper into zouk technique and more complicated movements (ex. boomerang variations, close embrace isolations, traveling turn techniques, and more). Instructor permission is required to join this class. Students who join the Beyond Foundations class are encouraged to stay for the Foundations class afterwards to continue to practice their fundamentals, and help the beginners!

For more advanced students, we are now offering an Advanced Techniques class from 7:30pm-8:30pm (in Studio 2). Students attending Level 2 and Level 3 must pay for both classes.

Instructor permission is required to join the Level 2 or the Level 3 class.

All students are welcome to stay for the free/included practica (practice time) from 8:30pm-9:15pm to continue to practice what we’ve worked on in class, get more help from the instructors, or social dance!

Why Train with AmoZouk?

AmoZouk is led by 4 (fabulous!) "zouk nerd" instructors, and we strive to have all 4 at each class to give more students 1-on-1 feedback with our instructor team. So each class you'll be able to practice the drills with other students, and our experienced teachers!

We also host a free/included 45-min "practica" at the end of the night to allow students additional time to train what they worked on in class, ask instructors questions, as well as social dance. We strongly believe being able to practice outside of class is incredibly beneficial to becoming a better dancer, so we pay for the additional studio space rental so our students can practice for free.

Cost:

  • $18 drop-in

  • $50 for a 4-class pack

  • $120 for a 10-class pack

Location:

We'll be in Studio 1 of Studio TimeOut (6001 Lyndale Ave S, Minneapolis):

There's plenty of parking in the lot out front of the building.

AmoZouk June Social + “Hair Flips & Dips” Workshop

Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/373922535117949

Join AmoZouk for our next monthly social coming up Saturday, June 15 at Studio TimeOut. As always, get to the social early (at 9pm) if you want to join our free/included zouk classes, one for newbies and another teaching a special move to more experienced dancers. Or just come for the social dancing which kicks off at 9:30pm.

⋆⋆⋆⋆ SPECIAL WORKSHOP IN JUNE ⋆⋆⋆⋆
We'll also be offering a special 2-hour workshop all about zouk hair flips (chicote variations) and dips (cambres) earlier in the evening from 5pm-7pm. (Keep scrolling for a more detailed workshop description & recommended prerequisites)

⋆⋆⋆⋆ SCHEDULE ⋆⋆⋆⋆

  • 5pm-7pm: 2-Hour Zouk Hair Flips & Dips Workshop

  • 7pm-9pm: Dinner at LOCATION TBD (possibly the Patty Wagon) - anyone is welcome to come hang out!

  • 9pm-9:30pm: Free/included zouk classes (2 classes to choose from!)

  • 9:30pm-12am: Zouk Social

⋆⋆⋆⋆ COST ⋆⋆⋆⋆

⋆⋆⋆⋆ OK TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE WORKSHOP ⋆⋆⋆⋆
Ever wonder how other zoukers do cool moves that use hair for styling? Looking for moves that can help you play with the music and help accent "the 1" with a flourish? Looking to dip your toe into the world of zouk head movement, or improve your head movement technique? This workshop is for you! In classic AmoZouk fashion, we will deep dive into the leading and following techniques of frame, stretch, delay, and the footwork of chicote (hair "whip") variations, as well as cambres (dips). In this 2-hour intermediate-level workshop you will learn:

  • Followers: hair movement technique to flip or flow your hair with grace (and not end up like Cousin It...)

  • Leading/following chicote clearly and safely (appropriate force application & direction, neck safety, etc)

  • Using a chicote as an accent to your regular basic step (on "the 1!")

  • Sideways chicote & tilted traveling turn technique

  • Drills to maintain our footwork while dissociating head movement (followers, if you can master this, this will be a HUGE help to all your future head movement!)

  • The difference between "chicote" (whip) and "cambre" (dip)

Heavy emphasis will be placed on the side chicote (as that is typically the more challenging variation, and some of you already are familiar with "regular" chicote).

WORKSHOP PREREQUISITES: Students must meet AmoZouk's Level 2 class prerequisites (listed here with GIFs: https://amozouk.com/beyond-foundations-prerecs), or have instructor permission from an AmoZouk instructor. Students must be comfortable leading/following viradinha, lateral to lunge, bonus, yo-yo and soltinho. Previous exposure to head movement helpful, but not required

ABOUT Gabriel
Gabriel is a highly skilled and experienced dancer with a diverse background in various movement styles. He began his journey 15 years ago with Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and quickly fell in love with tango, studying at one of the best schools in Rio de Janeiro. However, it was Brazilian Zouk that truly captured Gabriel's heart, and he had the opportunity to learn from Renata Pecanha, one of the founders of this beautiful art form, at her school in Rio.

For the past 5 years, Gabriel has been professionally teaching and sharing his love of dance with others. He currently resides and teaches in Iowa City, but travels throughout the Midwest to teach weekly classes in Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Des Moines. In addition to teaching in these areas, Gabriel has also started teaching nationally, sharing his passion and knowledge of Brazilian Zouk from DC to Chicago to San Francisco, and everywhere in between.

Aside from his love of dance, Gabriel is deeply committed to sharing his culture and heritage with his students. He is passionate about sharing the beauty and depth of Brazilian Zouk with others, and loves being able to bring a piece of his culture to his classes. Whether you are a seasoned dancer or just starting out, Gabriel's enthusiasm and expertise make him a wonderful teacher and mentor.

ABOUT Angélica
Angélica started dancing at her arts high school where she took her first modern and ballet class. From there she continued dancing at Zenón Dance school in Minneapolis. The following year went to university for dance education. In 2018 she found Brazilian Zouk. Angélica enjoys the surrender and flow that zouk provides. She loves seeing her students challenge themselves and be open to trying new things. She has spent time studying with Brenda & Anderson, Kuna Hamad, Paloma Alves, Xandy Liberato, Gui Prada, Gabriel de Carvalho, Lui & Larissa, Saulo & Yasmín.
